Etsy fees explained: what you really keep from a sale

Published

On a typical US Etsy order, three fees apply: a 6.5% transaction fee, a payment processing fee of 3% + $0.25, and a $0.20 listing fee. Together they take roughly 11% of a $35 order. The figures below come from Etsy’s own policy pages, checked on 25 October 2026.

The three fees

Fee Rate (US seller) Charged on
Transaction fee 6.5% Item price + shipping + gift wrap (not sales tax, for US sellers)
Payment processing 3% + $0.25 The whole order, including shipping and tax
Listing fee $0.20 Each listing; renewing after a sale charges it again

For sellers outside the US, the transaction fee also applies to taxes included in the listing price.

Worked example

A US seller sells an item for $30 and charges $5 shipping. The item costs $10 to make, the shipping label costs $4.50 and packaging $0.50.

Amount
Buyer pays (item + shipping) $35.00
Product cost −$10.00
Shipping label and packaging −$5.00
Transaction fee, 6.5% × $35 −$2.28
Payment fee, 3% × $35 + $0.25 −$1.30
Listing fee −$0.20
You keep $16.23

That is a 46.4% margin. (Fees are calculated exactly and the result rounded once, so the rounded lines add up to a cent less than the total.) The fees add up to $3.78 — not 6.5%, which is the number people usually quote.

If the buyer also pays sales tax, Etsy collects it, but the payment fee applies to it as well: 7% tax on $35 adds $2.45, and 3% of that is about $0.07 more in fees.

Fees depend on where your bank account is

Etsy’s payment fee follows the country of the seller’s bank account, not the buyer’s. Some examples from the Payments Policy:

Seller’s bank account Payment processing fee
United States 3% + $0.25
United Kingdom 4% + £0.20
Germany, France, Italy, Spain 4% + €0.30
Canada (domestic and US orders) 3% + CA$0.25
Australia (domestic orders) 3% + A$0.25
Türkiye 6.5% + ₺14.00

Etsy notes these fees are shown without VAT. If you aren’t registered for VAT, Etsy may add VAT on its fees.

Offsite Ads

If a sale comes through Etsy’s Offsite Ads, an extra fee applies: 15% of the attributed order, or 12% for shops with more than $10,000 in sales in the past 365 days, capped at $100 per order. It only applies to orders the ads bring in, so treat it as a cost on some orders rather than all.
